Research Proposal
For English Composition II, I had to write a research proposal for a paper.
Loggerhead Sea Turtles
I would like to write my research paper about loggerhead sea turtle rescue work in North Carolina and Florida. On vacation last year, I got to visit a sea turtle hospital and talk to the rescue workers who help rehabilitate the turtles. I also got to talk with the volunteers who work with the nesting turtles, and watch a nest of sea turtle hatchlings hatch and crawl toward the ocean. Because of this personal connection, I would like to research the impact that sea turtles have on the environment, and why the rescue workers think it is so important to save them. In doing so, I hope to find out the ways that everyday citizens and beach goers in particular can reduce the threats to this unique species.
I have read about these creatures in the past and have been fascinated by their life cycle and behaviors. They fill a unique niche in the ecosystem, as their primary prey is jellyfish. When the sea turtle population goes up, the jellyfish population goes down, making the beaches safer for tourists. On the other hand, there are also other species that eat the jellyfish, so saving the turtles might not be the only solution to this problem. In this paper, I would like to find what unique impacts the sea turtles have on the environment, and so show what it would mean if they were to go extinct.
Beyond that, I would like to show what is causing the turtles to go extinct. It's unfortunate that their populations are so negatively affected by the presence of humans.Anything from a discarded sandwich bag to the shadow of a beachfront hotel can prove harmful to their wellbeing. I would like to examine the impact the species' dwindling numbers have had on the environment. By showing the negative effects of losing this species, I hope to show how their survival can keep the marine ecosystem thriving
Lastly, I would like to provide some suggestions as to how people can help the turtles. When I visited the hospital in North Carolina, I was impressed by the dedication and grace of the rescue workers who volunteered to give the sea turtles the best chance of survival, many of them retirees who gave up their time to wait for hours beside nests or wrestle injured, bleeding sea turtles out of the water. Not everyone has the time or the opportunity to help in this way, but through research I would like to provide the reader with some simple, effective ways to protect the beach and keep it healthy.
